About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors discover projects, build a unified AI training portfolio, and grow into durable freelance careers working on the human side of AI.

About AI Training Work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is how modern models learn from real human examples — annotating data, evaluating outputs, and shaping model behavior. Contributors work remotely, often part-time, and directly influence how next-generation AI systems perform.

This role supports AI systems training infrastructure: the cloud platforms, orchestration, automation, and CI/CD pipelines that make data collection, model training, and evaluation reliable and scalable.

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting for a Senior DevOps Engineer (contract, part-time) on behalf of OpenTrain to design and maintain cloud-native infrastructure used in AI training workflows. This is a remote, worldwide role with a time commitment of 20+ hours per week.

Compensation: up to $130 USD per hour (hourly range provided: $30–$130/hr). Employment types: contractor and part-time. Language: English.

What You'll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable infrastructure using Kubernetes across AWS and GCP environments.
  • Develop, manage, and optimize CI/CD pipelines to enable continuous integration and delivery for AI training applications.
  • Automate infrastructure, deployment, and monitoring workflows using Python and DevOps best practices.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot distributed system issues, and implement proactive optimizations and security measures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support cloud-native architectures and improve application reliability.
  • Document architectures, processes, and runbooks clearly for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Promote transparent communication and knowledge sharing within the project team.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the core technical requirements and be able to work independently in distributed cloud environments. The posting lists experience level as Entry level, while the role requires strong practical DevOps expertise.

  • Expertise in Kubernetes orchestration and management of containerized applications.
  • Hands-on experience with both AWS and GCP cloud platforms.
  • Proven ability to develop automation scripts and tools using Python.
  • Deep understanding of infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD pipelines, and core DevOps principles.
  • Experience with monitoring, logging, and proactive system management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a collaborative mindset.

Helpful / Preferred Background

  • Certifications related to Kubernetes, AWS, or GCP.
  • Prior experience with AI/ML infrastructure or data-intensive environments.
  • Familiarity with additional programming languages or automation frameworks.

How Work Is Structured

This contract is part-time and remote; contributors choose hours that meet the 20+ hours/week expectation. Tasks will include engineering work on infrastructure and evaluation activities tied to code/data used in AI training (label types include coding tasks and evaluation/rating).

Apply through OpenTrain to build your profile, submit your experience, and connect with OpenTrain. Projects typically use a designated annotation or management tool (listed as OTHER in the job data), and pay is handled per the contract terms.
