About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect expert contributors with projects that teach AI systems how to reason, explain, and solve real-world problems while helping you build a unified public portfolio of your AI-training work. Creating an OpenTrain account is free.

Why AI training matters (and why physics experts are needed)

AI systems learn from examples and human feedback — and scientific fields like physics depend on careful, expert-guided review to ensure models reason correctly and communicate clearly. Contributors directly shape how models handle theoretical concepts, problem solving, and educational explanations across research and learning contexts.

This role places subject-matter expertise at the center of model development: your judgments and edits will influence how future AI assistants explain physics to students, researchers, and the public.

The role

OpenTrain is recruiting a remote Physics Expert Reviewer to evaluate and refine physics problems, solutions, and AI-generated explanations. This is a contract, part-time role that pays $70–$90 per hour and requires a commitment of 20+ hours per week. Work is asynchronous and fully remote.

  • Pay: $70–$90 per hour (hourly contractor work)
  • Time: 20+ hours per week, part-time contractor
  • Location: Remote — worldwide applicants accepted
  • Language: English fluency required
  • Data type: Text; label types include evaluation ratings and text generation
  • Tools: Project uses an external/other labeling platform (details provided on assignment)

What you'll do day-to-day

You will apply your physics knowledge and teaching experience to judge and improve AI outputs, produce concise written feedback, and help standardize review practices across projects.

  • Review and refine physics problems, solutions, and explanatory content across sub-disciplines.
  • Evaluate model outputs for scientific validity, clarity, and educational value using structured ratings.
  • Edit and rewrite AI-generated explanations to improve accuracy and pedagogical effectiveness.
  • Provide high-level feedback on complex research topics and theoretical concepts.
  • Contribute to asynchronous discussions with project leads and fellow experts to standardize review best practices.

Requirements

You must meet the core academic and professional qualifications and be comfortable working independently in an asynchronous remote environment.

  • PhD in Physics, or current PhD study in Physics with advanced research and teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in theoretical and applied physics.
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, developing curriculum, publishing, or critically reviewing scientific research.
  • Strong written communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to produce concise, actionable feedback.
  • Comfort collaborating asynchronously and meeting quality standards for scientific content.

Who should apply

Apply if you are an active researcher or educator in physics who enjoys translating complex ideas into clear explanations and wants to influence how AI handles scientific content. This contract is ideal for academics, postdocs, or advanced PhD candidates seeking flexible, remote work that leverages research and teaching experience.

How it works — practical steps

Create a free OpenTrain account to apply and manage your AI-training work. After applying, you may complete a short qualification task to demonstrate subject-matter accuracy and communication style. Approved contractors receive project briefs, access to the labeling/review platform, and asynchronous collaboration channels with project leads.

  • OpenTrain lets you build a unified portfolio of your AI-training contributions and apply in minutes.
  • Expect asynchronous feedback cycles and structured rating tasks alongside freeform text edits.
  • Compensation is hourly and paid per the contract terms; tooling and submission guidelines are provided when you start.
