About OpenTrain
OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help subject-matter experts discover projects, build a unified portfolio, and grow a durable freelance career contributing to how AI systems learn.
This posting connects you directly with an advanced AI training project seeking mathematics experts; creating an OpenTrain account is free and lets you apply in minutes.
Why AI Training Matters
AI training (sometimes called data labeling or human feedback) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Experts craft, review, and rate examples that teach models to reason, explain, and solve real problems.
For mathematicians, this work is an opportunity to shape how future models understand proofs, problem solving, and explanations used across education, research, and technical applications.
About This Project
OpenTrain is recruiting PhD-level mathematicians to contribute high-quality responses and evaluations for an advanced, text-based AI training effort. You will work as a remote contractor within a distributed network of experts.
Tasks are text-focused and center on generating and rating mathematical answers that will be used to teach and evaluate generative models.
- Location: Remote / worldwide (English required)
- Engagement: Contractor, part-time
- Time: 20+ hours/week
The Role
You will produce authoritative, pedagogically sound mathematics responses and provide high-quality evaluations of model outputs. No prior AI experience is required—the project prioritizes deep subject-matter expertise.
Work includes both text generation (writing model-style answers) and evaluation/rating of responses against project guidelines.
- Data type: Text
- Label types: TEXT_GENERATION and EVALUATION_RATING
- Annotation tools: project-specific (OTHER)
- Pay: USD $80–$90 per hour (paid hourly)
- Commitment: 20+ hours/week
What You'll Do
Expect to create clear, rigorous answers to complex mathematics prompts and to review model outputs for correctness, clarity, and pedagogical quality. You will follow project formats and help refine guidelines based on real examples.
- Develop comprehensive, accurate responses for undergraduate and graduate-level math prompts
- Review and refine model answers so they exemplify subject mastery
- Analyze proofs, problem solutions, and concepts and present them in structured, accessible explanations
- Collaborate with other experts to ensure consistency, precision, and educational value
- Provide feedback to improve response standards, guidelines, and workflows
- Adhere to project formatting, quality, and timeliness requirements
Requirements
The project requires demonstrable expertise and strong communication: you must meet the listed qualifications to be considered.
- PhD in Mathematics or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution (required)
- Proven track record of academic excellence and graduate-level subject expertise
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English
- Ability to articulate complex mathematical concepts clearly and succinctly
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing precise, high-quality work
Helpful Background
The following experiences are not required but will help you succeed and move faster in the project.
- Experience authoring or reviewing textbooks, exams, problem sets, or journal articles
- Familiarity with multiple branches of pure and applied mathematics
- Comfort working in remote, collaborative environments and responding to iterative feedback
