About This Role
OpenTrain is hiring a contractor to support advanced mechanical design work. In this role, you will create and modify detailed parametric 3D CAD models, produce manufacturing-ready engineering drawings, validate designs for production use, and prepare technical documentation and assembly instructions. The work centers on precision engineering, real-world manufacturability, and clear documentation for complex parts and assemblies.
What You Will Do
- Build and edit parametric 3D CAD models for mechanical parts and assemblies using FreeCAD or comparable software.
- Produce engineering drawings with GD&T and tolerance stack-ups for manufacturing handoff.
- Design components for sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, plastics, and injection molding.
- Review CAD models for accuracy, readiness, and manufacturability.
- Prepare technical documentation and assembly instructions.
- Revise models and documents based on technical feedback.
Required Skills
- Experience designing mechanical components for manufacturing environments.
- Proficiency with FreeCAD or similar parametric CAD software.
- Working knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design for manufacturing best practices.
- Ability to produce production-grade CAD models and validate them against manufacturability criteria.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Python scripting for CAD automation is a plus.
