About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help freelancers discover projects, build a unified portfolio of AI-training work, and grow a durable freelance career without recreating proof of work on every platform.

OpenTrain connects experienced professionals with practical, paid opportunities to shape how modern AI systems understand domain-specific content — including legal documents and compliance workflows.

Why AI Training Work Matters

AI training (data labeling and human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Legal experts who annotate documents and explain complex scenarios directly improve how models reason about contracts, regulation, and risk.

These roles are often fully remote and flexible, making them a great way to apply legal experience part-time while contributing to cutting-edge AI development.

The Role — Legal Expert (contract, part-time)

OpenTrain is recruiting a part-time remote Legal Expert contractor to contribute domain expertise to next-generation AI training projects for OpenTrain. This is a contract engagement for a practicing attorney who will review and annotate commercial legal documents, provide expert written feedback on complex legal scenarios, and help AI models learn to reason accurately about law, contracts, and compliance.

You will work primarily with document datasets and perform tasks that include both evaluation ratings and text-generation style annotations (expert explanations, redlines, and guidance) to improve model performance on legal tasks.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week
  • Data type: Documents (contract drafts, policies, regulatory text)
  • Labeling tasks: Evaluation/ratings and text-generation annotations

What You'll Do

Apply your legal expertise to create high-quality annotations, redlines, and written guidance that teach AI models to identify risk, interpret clauses, and suggest improvements.

Collaborate asynchronously with multidisciplinary teams to translate complex legal reasoning into clear, model-friendly outputs.

  • Review, analyze, and redline commercial contracts for accuracy and business-aligned compliance
  • Provide expert input on employment law, structured finance, private equity, and M&A scenarios
  • Evaluate and advise on SaaS Master Service Agreements (MSAs), identifying risks and improvements
  • Interpret regulatory requirements and develop compliance guidelines for annotation teams
  • Assess data privacy policies and practices against international standards and regulations
  • Deliver clear, actionable written feedback that distills complex legal concepts for diverse audiences

Requirements

To apply you must meet the stated professional and technical requirements below. OpenTrain preserves every substantive requirement from the project brief.

  • Active Bar membership in good standing and admission to the bar in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Minimum 3 years of legal practice with experience in commercial contracts, employment law, and structured finance
  • Deep knowledge of private equity, mergers & acquisitions, and regulatory compliance
  • Proficiency in contract redlining and negotiation with strong attention to detail
  • Hands-on experience reviewing SaaS MSAs and advising on data privacy matters
  • Exceptional written communication skills and strong analytical judgment

Helpful Experience (not required)

These backgrounds make candidates especially competitive but are not strict requirements for every engagement.

  • Advising technology-driven organizations or legal teams supporting SaaS businesses
  • Familiarity with international regulatory frameworks and multi-jurisdictional transactions
  • Previous involvement in AI, legal technology, or knowledge transfer initiatives
