About AI training and data collection

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people record and curate examples that teach models how to act. This work is remote, flexible, and accessible to people with attention to detail and practical skills.

This project focuses on collecting high-quality video demonstrations that help personal-robotics systems learn to manipulate everyday household objects.

The role

You will work as a contractor collecting specification-compliant video demonstrations of household tasks using a UMI gripper wearable and supporting recording equipment. The data you produce trains robots to perform real-world interactions in homes.

  • Position type: U.S.-based contractor, part-time.
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week.
  • Data type: video capture (new data collection).
  • Wearables/equipment: UMI gripper wearable and additional recording gear provided and shipped for onboarding.
  • Client/project: personal robotics video capture and data collection.

What you'll do

  • Capture and submit video demonstrations of everyday household tasks following detailed project specifications.
  • Set up and operate the UMI gripper, wearable devices, and supporting recording equipment so footage reflects natural hand movements.
  • Follow step-by-step task instructions and incorporate reviewer feedback to improve data quality.
  • Maintain a steady weekly workflow and communicate clearly with the project team about issues or questions.
  • Upload large video files from a home connection and ensure submissions meet technical and quality standards.

Requirements

  • Strong attention to detail and comfort working from complex written instructions.
  • Manual dexterity and precision executing household tasks (kitchen, living spaces, common items).
  • Ability to operate wearable devices, recording equipment, and perform large-file uploads from home.
  • Comfort with extended VR headset wear during recording sessions.
  • A fully equipped U.S. household (kitchen, living areas, common household items) where recordings will take place.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; English required.

Compensation & work setup

Pay is per approved task/data; rates depend on quality benchmarks and calibration status.

  • Pilot pay: $30 per approved hour.
  • Post-calibration pay: $60 per approved hour once quality benchmarks are consistently met.
  • Equipment for onboarding is shipped to selected contributors.
  • This is remote work performed in your U.S. home as a contractor; timely, consistent weekly availability is expected.

Who should apply

This role suits people who enjoy hands-on, detail-oriented work and can perform household tasks precisely and repeatably. Prior data-collection or usability study experience is helpful but not required.

Applicants should be comfortable with wearable technology and VR headsets, able to handle repetitive tasks, and open to feedback-driven improvement.

How the process works

Create a free OpenTrain account and apply to the project to be considered. Selected contributors will receive equipment for onboarding and complete calibration tasks before regular work begins.

Work begins in a pilot phase where approved submissions are reviewed; consistent quality leads to calibration clearance and higher pay.

  • Apply via your OpenTrain profile and complete any required onboarding forms or tests.
  • Onboarding includes equipment shipment, setup guidance, and an initial calibration period.
  • Produce approved submissions to move from pilot pay to calibrated pay rates.
