About AI training and this opportunity
AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Engineers and contributors prepare, validate, and refine the examples and tools that modern models learn from — and frontend tooling plays a central role in how labeling workflows scale and how model training data is produced.
This role lets you apply frontend engineering skills directly to the systems used to train next-generation AI models. You do not need prior AI research experience; your TypeScript and frontend expertise are the primary qualification.
The role
OpenTrain is recruiting a skilled Frontend Developer with deep TypeScript experience to develop, optimize, and maintain frontend components for systems that support AI training. This is a fractional contract role (part-time) focused on delivering high-quality UI, strong data integration, and robust testing to productionize labeling and training workflows.
- Type: Contractor, Part-time
- Location: Remote (worldwide)
- Time commitment: 20+ hours/week
- Client: OpenTrain
What you'll do
You will own frontend features and components that connect to backend APIs, support data-heavy workflows, and deliver performant, maintainable user interfaces used in AI training pipelines. You will collaborate closely with designers, backend engineers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
- Develop, optimize, and maintain scalable frontend components using TypeScript, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
- Integrate RESTful APIs and manage data flow between frontend and backend services
- Implement and maintain automation testing strategies for CI/CD pipelines
- Participate in code reviews, write documentation, and follow best practices for code quality and maintainability
- Work with designers and backend developers to deliver seamless user experiences
Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate strong, practical expertise across modern frontend technologies and tooling. We will evaluate your ability to deliver large-scale, maintainable web applications and your experience with automated testing and deployment workflows.
- Expert-level proficiency in HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript
- Deep experience with TypeScript in large-scale web projects
- Demonstrated expertise in API integration and data handling best practices
- Solid understanding of frontend tooling (e.g., Webpack, Babel, npm, Yarn)
- Proven track record with automation testing frameworks and methodologies
- Strong focus on code quality, maintainability, and performance optimization
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for remote collaboration
Helpful background (not required)
The following experiences are beneficial but not mandatory. They help you ramp faster and collaborate effectively with distributed teams building production labeling and training tools.
- Experience working in distributed, remote-first engineering teams
- Background with continuous integration, deployment, and monitoring of frontend applications
- Familiarity with modern design systems and UX/UI best practices
