OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect skilled contributors with projects that help modern AI systems learn from human examples, letting you discover work, build a portfolio, and grow a durable freelance career in this fast-growing industry.
This role is listed through OpenTrain to find domain experts who want flexible, remote contract work contributing directly to how state-of-the-art AI behaves.
About AI training work
AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people create, review, and rate examples so models learn to solve real problems. Projects range from annotating images and transcribing audio to writing examples and evaluating model outputs.
As an Excel domain expert, your work will help AI learn to reason about spreadsheets, automation, scenario modeling, and operational decision-making—skills used across consulting, operations, and strategy teams.
The role
OpenTrain is recruiting for an Excel Expert to generate, evaluate, and document advanced spreadsheet solutions for AI training. You will provide high-quality examples, feedback, and templates that teach models how to solve complex business and operational problems using Excel.
This is a remote, part-time contract role requiring a minimum of 20 hours per week. The project is open worldwide; English fluency is required.
- Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
- Time commitment: 20+ hours/week
- Pay: $40–$55 USD per hour
What you'll do
Your day-to-day work centers on reviewing, enhancing, and documenting Excel workbooks and templates so they can be used as training data and evaluation examples for AI systems. Clear written explanations and structured examples are essential.
You will collaborate with project teams to identify operational workflows, simulate real-world business problems in spreadsheets, and produce instructional materials that capture expert techniques and best practices.
- Analyze and improve complex Excel files focused on operations, strategy, and data analysis.
- Design and document templates, formulas, dashboards, and automated solutions for AI examples.
- Provide detailed written feedback and evaluation ratings on spreadsheet solutions.
- Create scenario models and case studies that demonstrate advanced Excel techniques.
- Communicate findings clearly in writing and (when requested) brief verbal walkthroughs.
Requirements
You must demonstrate expert-level Excel skills and related experience; prior AI-training work is not required.
Preserve the listed requirements: these are mandatory for consideration.
- Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including advanced functions, pivot tables, data validation, and automation tools.
- Proven experience developing Excel solutions for business operations, strategy, or consulting environments.
- Strong analytical ability to solve complex, non-financial business problems using Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong attention to detail.
- Experience documenting processes, creating instructional materials, and giving clear actionable feedback.
- Experience with data analysis, scenario modeling, and workflow optimization in Excel.
Preferred background
Applicants with experience in business operations, strategy, or management consulting will be a strong fit. Familiarity contributing to machine learning datasets or creating Excel-based tools and dashboards is a plus but not required.
- Background in management consulting, business operations, or strategy is preferred.
- Experience building Excel dashboards or tools for operational excellence is beneficial.
- Prior contribution to AI training/data labeling projects is helpful but optional.
How it works & logistics
Scope and tools: Tasks involve document-type data (Excel workbooks). Labeling work includes evaluation/rating and data-collection style contributions; the project uses a non-standard ('OTHER') labeling platform chosen by the client. You will submit annotated files, ratings, and documentation according to project guidelines.
Apply through OpenTrain to be matched with this contract. The role is worldwide-eligible; English language fluency is required. Compensation is hourly at $40–$55 USD based on experience and deliverables. Expect independent, remote work with opportunities to shape the examples and templates used to teach AI systems.
