This role supports AI model fine-tuning by ensuring the databases that store and serve training data are reliable, performant, and secure.

The role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Database Administrator to contribute directly to next-generation AI systems by managing the databases that supply training data. This is a part-time, remote contractor role estimated at about 20 hours per week for 1–3 months with flexible scheduling.

What you'll do

You will manage large-scale relational database environments and work with cross-functional teams to keep training data available, accurate, and performant.

• Analyze and optimize database performance in large-scale MySQL and PostgreSQL environments.
• Design, implement, and maintain robust database structures in partnership with development teams.
• Develop, test, and manage data backup and recovery procedures for business-critical information.
• Proactively monitor database environments to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align database solutions with evolving business needs.
• Document database configurations, processes, and best practices for operational transparency.
• Stay current with emerging SQL and database technologies to drive continuous improvement.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the core technical and communication requirements below. All required skills are taken from the role description and are essential for effective contribution.

• Advanced hands-on expertise with MySQL and PostgreSQL administration.
• Proven track record in database optimization and troubleshooting.
• Strong command of SQL for querying, scripting, and performance tuning.
• Experience with backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work effectively in a remote, distributed team.
• Collaborative mindset and a proactive problem-solving approach.

Helpful background

Compensation, schedule, and how to apply

Pay: hourly contractor rate between USD $25 and $70 per hour, with a target top rate of $70/hr. Time commitment: ~20 hours per week, part-time, with flexible scheduling for a 1–3 month engagement. Work is remote and open worldwide; English is listed among the project languages.
