About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect specialists with projects that teach and shape AI systems, help contributors build unified portfolios, and support long-term freelance careers in this fast-growing field.

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people create, evaluate, and refine examples that models learn from. Work ranges from writing model responses and ranking outputs to evaluating technical content for accuracy. This role sits at the intersection of deep chemistry expertise and generative-AI training.

The role

OpenTrain is recruiting a Chemistry Expert to produce authoritative, high-quality chemistry content for AI training. You will write model-ready responses to advanced chemistry prompts, evaluate and rate chemistry solutions, develop benchmark (golden) answers, and collaborate with annotation leads and project managers to define and uphold quality standards.

What you'll do

  • Write accurate, high-quality responses to advanced chemistry prompts for model training and instruction.
  • Review chemistry questions, data, and proposed solutions for scientific accuracy, completeness, and alignment with best practices.
  • Create benchmark golden responses and clear explanations that serve as training references and evaluation standards.
  • Develop contextual explanations across foundational and specialized chemistry topics (organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, materials).
  • Collaborate with annotation leads and project managers to refine rubrics, examples, and acceptance criteria.
  • Join occasional remote discussions or workshops to clarify project goals and ensure domain alignment.

Requirements

  • PhD in Chemistry or a closely related discipline (required).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to explain complex chemical concepts clearly.
  • Experience producing or reviewing technical, educational, or research chemistry content.
  • Familiarity with multiple chemistry subfields such as organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, or materials chemistry.
  • High attention to detail and a strong focus on scientific accuracy.
  • Comfort collaborating remotely with cross-functional annotation teams.

Helpful background

  • Prior experience contributing to AI, data annotation, or digital content projects is helpful but not required.
  • Familiarity with developing benchmark answers, grading rubrics, or instructional content is a plus.

How it works & compensation

This is a part-time contractor role with a time expectation of 20+ hours per week. The project is open to contributors worldwide who can work in English.

Compensation is hourly pay at USD $80–$90 per hour. Work will focus on text-based tasks: text generation and evaluation/rating. Labeling software is listed as OTHER; annotation workflows and tooling will be provided by project leads.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours/week.
  • Data type: Text; label types: Text generation and evaluation/rating.
  • Language: English required; open to worldwide applicants.

Who should apply

Apply if you hold a PhD in chemistry, enjoy translating advanced science into clear explanations, and want to shape how AI systems handle chemistry questions. This role is ideal for researchers, educators, or domain experts interested in flexible, remote work contributing directly to model quality.
