This role is posted through OpenTrain to connect skilled professionals with paid, remote AI-training contracts where subject-matter expertise directly improves model behavior.

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Experts provide examples, evaluations, and explanations so models learn to reason about real-world tasks—like interpreting building codes and permit documents.

These projects are often remote and flexible, and contributors have direct, measurable impact on how state-of-the-art AI systems understand specialized domains.

The role — what this contract looks like

We are recruiting a Building Code Compliance Expert to provide high-quality document evaluations and reasoned compliance judgments that will be used to train and evaluate AI systems.

This is a US-only, remote contractor role with part-time hours. You will work with construction drawings, permits, zoning materials, and related documents to produce clear, professional compliance analyses.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
  • Pay: Hourly, USD $80–$120 per hour (project pays per hour)
  • Location: Remote — United States only
  • Data type: DOCUMENT (plan sets, permits, text-based materials)
  • Labeling task: EVALUATION_RATING (detailed compliance evaluations)
  • (platform-specific tools provided)

What you'll do

  • Review architectural and engineering plans to assess building code compliance across residential and commercial projects
  • Interpret blueprints, permit documents, zoning requirements, and construction documentation to identify compliance issues
  • Analyze code-related scenarios and provide clear compliance reasoning and actionable recommendations
  • Identify permitting issues, potential code violations, and regulatory concerns and explain their implications
  • Deliver clear, professional written reports and explanations suitable for training AI models
  • Support AI training by producing accurate, reproducible examples and ratings used to teach model behavior

Requirements

You must demonstrate real-world experience and the ability to produce clear, defensible compliance judgments. This role requires strong independent work habits and the capacity to manage multiple assignments remotely.

  • Experience with residential and/or commercial construction projects
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments on a remote schedule
  • Fluent in English (work language for this role)
  • Eligible to work in the United States (US-only role)

Helpful background (not required)

  • Certifications such as ICC, NFPA, or relevant state-issued licenses
  • Experience working with city/county building departments, municipal permitting, or code enforcement
  • Experience in plan review, virtual inspections, or compliance consulting
