Creating an OpenTrain account is free and gives you access to paid, remote annotation projects across industries — an easy way to start and grow a career in AI training.
About This Work and the Industry
AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Your annotations directly help models learn to extract structured information from documents like driver’s licenses.
This project focuses on document understanding for US driver’s licenses: the labels you collect will be used to train and improve information-extraction and OCR models.
- Work is 100% remote and flexible — great for part-time schedules.
- No specific degree required; many contributors start with basic skills and build experience.
The Role
You will review images of US driver’s licenses (crowdsourced templates) and create precise bounding-box annotations for many standard fields. Work is entry-level and ideal for detail-oriented people who can read English and recognize common US document formats.
This is contractor, part-time work performed using Label Studio with a focus on accuracy and consistency.
- Label Type: Bounding-box annotation on images.
- Labeling Software: Label Studio.
- Data Type: Images of US driver’s licenses and state IDs.
Fields You Will Annotate
You will draw boxes and tag the following fields when present on each license image. Accuracy and correct field selection are essential for training reliable extraction models.
- Jurisdiction name, credential type, Real ID indicator
- Family name, given name, middle name, suffix, date of birth, sex
- Height, weight, eye color, hair color
- Street address, city, state, ZIP code
- Document number, class, endorsements, restrictions
- Date of issue, date of expiration, under-18/under-21 dates
- Organ donor indicator, veteran indicator
- Portrait, ghost image, signature, customer ID number
What You'll Do Day-to-Day
Open each image in Label Studio, locate the required field(s), and draw tight bounding boxes around the visible text or feature. Select the correct field label for each box and follow provided labeling guidelines.
Follow quality guidelines, complete brief training tasks, and participate in spot-checks or feedback cycles to maintain annotation quality.
- Annotate dozens of images per session, focusing on precision and consistent labeling.
- Use training examples and QA feedback to improve speed and accuracy.
- Flag unclear or damaged images for review according to instructions.
Requirements
This is an entry-level role with minimal formal requirements. Read every requirement carefully — they reflect what you must be able to do from day one.
- Basic familiarity with what a standard US driver’s license or state ID looks like.
- Ability to clearly read English text and recognize common US address formats, dates, and document fields.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy when extracting information from ID images.
- Previous experience with data labeling, document annotation, or image tagging is a plus but not required.
