Expert System

AI that mimics human expert decision-making using knowledge-based reasoning, typically with if-then rules.
Definition

An expert system is a branch of artificial intelligence that focuses on emulating the decision-making abilities of a human expert in a specific domain. These systems are designed to solve complex problems by reasoning through structured bodies of knowledge, which are often represented in the form of if-then rules.

This knowledge base is derived from the expertise of human specialists and is structured in a way that allows the system to make inferences and decisions similar to a human expert.

Expert systems also include an inference engine, a component that applies the rules to the known facts to deduce new facts or reach conclusions, and a user interface through which users can interact with the system. The primary goal of expert systems is to provide accurate, consistent answers to specific problems and to disseminate expert knowledge more widely than would be possible through direct human consultation.

Examples/Use Cases:

One classic example of an expert system is MYCIN, developed in the early 1970s to diagnose bacterial infections and recommend antibiotics. MYCIN's knowledge base contained rules derived from medical experts, and it used these rules to infer diagnoses and treatment recommendations based on patient data. Another example is in the field of financial services, where expert systems can assess loan applications by reasoning through complex regulations and applicant data, mimicking the decision-making process of a loan officer.

These systems evaluate the applicant's financial data against a set of predefined rules and criteria to determine the risk associated with the loan and to make a recommendation for approval or denial. This allows for faster, more consistent decision-making that can scale to handle a large volume of applications.
