Definition

Decision Theory is a multidisciplinary field that examines how individuals, groups, or entities select choices among alternatives and the resulting consequences of those choices. It encompasses mathematical models and analytical techniques to assess and enhance decision-making processes. Normative decision theory prescribes optimal decision-making strategies based on rational criteria and consistent value systems.

In contrast, descriptive decision theory investigates actual decision-making behavior, often highlighting deviations from rationality due to cognitive biases, emotions, and social influences. This field integrates principles from psychology, economics, statistics, and operations research, and is pivotal in artificial intelligence for developing algorithms that enable machines to make decisions under uncertainty.

Examples/Use Cases:

In AI, decision theory is applied in the development of autonomous vehicles, where the system must constantly make decisions based on uncertain information about its environment, such as the actions of other drivers, road conditions, and traffic signals. Normative models might be used to program the vehicle to choose the safest and most efficient routes, while descriptive models could help understand and predict human driver behavior to improve co-navigation and safety.
