For instance, if an AI assistant is asked, "Is it okay to leave the house without turning off the oven?" the system uses commonsense knowledge that leaving appliances on can be dangerous, to provide a sensible response, despite the specific scenario possibly not being explicitly covered in its training data.

Another application is in robotics, where an AI system controlling a robot in a home environment might use commonsense knowledge to navigate and interact safely and effectively. For example, understanding that liquids can spill and cause damage or that humans can be startled by sudden movements enables the robot to perform tasks like delivering a cup of water or moving around the house in ways that are safe and considerate of human cohabitants.
